Charles Eames described the design intent as 'the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt.' Ray called the result 'comfortable and un-designy.' Three molded plywood shells (headrest, backrest, seat) connected by rubber shock mounts to an aluminum base. Cherry, walnut, or palisander rosewood veneer over seven plywood layers (originally five). 1956. MoMA permanent collection since 1960. Herman Miller has built the same chair for almost 70 years.
